A new and surprising finish enters the Alfred Dunhill catalogue in 1917, different from the previous smooth ones and destined to dominate the scene of white-point pipes, the Shell Briar, literally briar with the grain of the shell.

Worked with abrasion processes on the wood surface to create non-slippery porous games and streaks, always different and never banal, like the internal designs of the wood, the shell enchants with the most fabulous ripples that the work of grating and pulverizing the surface of the briar creates in a unique way for each pipe.

It seemed like a second-rate pipe, but instead it conquered hegemony for its underground style, for the quality of the raw material, and for the English design that saw the billiard pipe as a status symbol with its dark and deep color, the mouthpiece in high-quality German ebonite and a secret in the oil treatment to make the whole thing an object forever.
